alterations in the lacrimal system.
Tears play a vital role in keeping the eyes moist and protected. Normally, they flow from the eyes into the nose through a duct known as the tear duct. However, when this duct is blocked or not functioning properly, tears cannot drain properly, leading to constant tearing, recurrent infections or eye discomfort.
What is lacrimal duct surgery?
The aim of surgery is to clear the blockage and create a new pathway for tears to drain properly into the nose. This will improve tearing and reduce the risk of infection.
What is the treatment for tearing?
If the tearing is caused by an obstruction in the tear duct, the surgical technique will depend on the level of the obstruction. If it is a problem at the entrance, a small surgery called ‘puntoplasty’ can be performed. If the obstruction is more distal, dacryocystorhinotomy (DCR) may be used.
What is a dacryocystorhinostomy?
This is a surgical procedure in which we create a new channel between the tear sac and the nose to allow tears to flow properly. It can be performed with a small incision in the skin near the eye or through the nose using an endoscope.
What type of anaesthesia is used?
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
How long does the surgery last?
It usually lasts about an hour, but you will need to stay in hospital for a few more hours until you have fully recovered from the general anaesthetic.
What is the postoperative period like and is it painful?
No. Postoperative discomfort is usually minimal and bearable with oral analgesia. During surgery a temporary tube is placed in the duct to keep the new pathway open. This tube will be removed 6 weeks after surgery.
When will I be able to return to normal life?
In general, per week.
What are the risks?
Like any surgery, there are risks, although these are rare. The risk of infection is low and usually well managed with antibiotics. Slight bleeding after DCR is normal and to be expected, but in the vast majority of cases it is manageable at home – we will explain how to do this. The success rate of surgery is approximately 90%, but occasionally, tearing may persist – in such cases secondary surgery may be considered.
Will my scar be visible?
In general, the scar is practically imperceptible shortly after surgery. It is approximately 1cm long and is hidden in the furrow of the eyebrow.

We have a challenge: a need to identify and, if possible, address or improve. When our eyes are constantly watering, the tissues around them are irritated, we can’t wear make-up and we are forced to carry tissues behind our eyes all the time. All this makes us feel uncomfortable and our self-esteem is undermined.
My goal is to help my patients look as young as they feel.
And always taking care of the most important thing: their eyes. That is, to see and look good.
